  • Harry the Hummingbird: "A Lesson Learned"

    Patricia A Thorpe

Paperback (Pageturner, Press and Media, Jan. 12, 2018)
The story line of this book was created from the pleasure I attained while looking out of a large window at my lake property in Wisconsin. Over many years, as I drank my morning coffee or ate my lunch at noon, I observed in wonderment many different kinds of animals and birds interacting with one another.Nature continued to illustrate further observations that I hope to share as additional story lines in the future. "Harry" is the name I lovingly gave to a hummingbird that I believed had acted in a manner that could be created into a children's book as a learning method. Perhaps, this book can be enjoyed by children and can assist them in learning the importance of sharing. If you enjoyed reading Harry the Hummingbird and how he learned to share, you may also enjoy reading Chucky the Black Squirrel who learned not to fear or judge others before getting to know them, or The Canada Goslings Lilly and Scooter who learned to never give up and keep trying until they accomplish their goal.

  • Letters and Words Sudoku

    Brian G Tordoff

Paperback (Pageturner, Press and Media, July 6, 2018)
This new puzzle is like Sudoku that is used in many new books. But this one is different. It uses letters instead of numbers. It uses nine letters instead of nine numbers and the letters are not always the same. Each puzzle has a list of the nine letters that are being used in each puzzle. Just like the Sudoku puzzles there are nine groups of nine letters. There will be 2 parts for these puzzles. The first part is like the Sudoku puzzles. There will be a 9X9 table with some of the letters missing. This is just like the Sudoku puzzles, only it uses letters. This puzzle is still the same but it may use f t h b m g o e a, or, s m l g b y i o u. Generally, 6 consonants and 3 vowels are used, but there may be times when 7 consonants and 2 vowels, or 5 and 4 are being used. There is also a blank table which is 4 columns by 9 rows. That is the area in which you will record the second part. You have already figured out what all the letters are; now you get to see how many words you can find. This is Part 2. Part 2 is completely different from the Sudoku. This is where you go through your answers to part one and see how many words you can find. Some of the puzzles have as many at 15 words and some as many as 25 words. It is all dependent on the letters that are used. This is the part than can really be difficult. You will be going through the puzzle, after you have done the hard work of finding all the letters, and trying to find words. All words in the answers are at least 3 letters long.

  • Crazy Bird Stories: Benny's Dreamtime Adventure Book 2

    Daryl Barnes

Paperback (Pageturner, Press and Media, Nov. 4, 2019)
The idea for this book came to me one day whilst I was sitting on the beach near Finlayson's Point at Seaforth on the Central Queensland coast. I was watching a solitary Beach Stone-curlew as it sauntered over the tidal mudflats creating a mournful and rather sad image as the sun was setting over the horizon in the west. This created elongated shadows of the bird plus the oddly twisted mangrove tree that was scattered nearby along the foreshore. Other than this bird, there was no other life form visible to me anywhere.Where I sat near the high tide mark, I could see the ocean some two hundred metres away in the distance. It was low tide and before too long it would begin to make the long and steady journey back to where I sat. So there was a large area of exposed sea-bed available for the Beach Stone-curlew to explore and to search for food like crustaceans and shellfish. But there was no urgency shown by the bird as it was more concerned with my presence than it was in looking for food.It could hardly be described as a handsome bird-like that of a Black-necked Stork (Jabiru), Brolga or Great Egret and so would not be high on the list of priorities for selection to feature as the main character in a storybook. So why did I choose the Beach Stone-curlew?My reason I've used it as the main character is to help raise its profile and awareness to highlight the issues surrounding its existence where habitat pressures by man is forcing it to more remote areas of the east coastline of Australia. It's breeding habits also make it very vulnerable as the female lays one or maybe two eggs amongst the high tide debris.Welcome to my second book in the series of Crazy Bird Stories. This book is significantly different from the first although it does have some similarities as you will discover.Since my involvement with Birdlife Mackay, I have had the privilege to witness all the birds that are regulars in our area, including seasonal birds. During this time I have seen at first hand the state of the environment where our birds live and so have identified some key areas where something can be done to preserve and enhance critical habitat. This book highlights the importance of undisturbed tidal flats to the Beach Stone-curlew and its survival.
